We cannot always predict a bear's behavior. What we can do while in the field is try our best to be sensible and responsible.
While camping in bear country it is important to always keep a clean camp.
Never leave food in or around your tent.
Store food properly in bear proof containers or hung appropriately in trees.
Use an electric fence around your camp. They are inexpensive, lightweight and well worth the investment.
At Shadow of The Bear we recommend hikers, campers and photographers carry pepper spray as a deterrent for bears and other large animals. Be sure to learn how to properly use bear spray and NEVER discharge the spray into the wind.
Most importantly in bear country, never camp on bear trails or in thick brush, be predictable and let the wildlife know you are there.
When choosing a camping spot, choose an area well in the open, away from a bears' food source.
Bears' have a nose better than that of a bloodhound. They do not like to be crept up on or hidden from.
Like us, bears' have a personal space they feel comfortable in. Be aware of this and if a bear becomes agitated with your presence, move away. Always give bears' a wide berth and the right of way.
For the most part, bears' know whether they are being stalked or watched and will let you know if you are infringing on their personal space.
If you are predictable and remain in one spot while watching/photographing them, they will go on about their normal activities.
