While whale watching in Kodiak recently, Leslie & Peter encountered an entangled Humpback whale in an isolated bay on the island. They managed to approach the distressed mammal and cut an estimated 100 feet of 3/4-inch nylon rope free from the whale. They contacted the marine biologist, Kate Wynne in Kodiak who in turn contacted the coast guard. A helicopter was dispatched to search for the whale the following day. The whale was not found, yet after many hours and a community effort to find the mammal, we feel confident that enough of the entanglement was cut free for it to continue its southerly migration. There is not a picture of the entire fluke available, which is how biologists identify individual whales, though we do have a photo of the dorsal fin, one that has a unique divot, which can be used as a sure means of identification. The whale will be catalogued as Aurora. We are asking whale watchers in the north Pacific to alert Shadow of The Bear and/or a marine biologist in your area if you spot this whale. Thankyou!
