padSummer Bears

During the summer months, bears feed on an abundance of salmon, consisting of; chinook, also known as king salmon having the highest fat content, sockeye, also known as red salmon, chum, also known as dog salmon, coho, also known as silver salmon and humpies, also known as pink salmon.

Berries are also an essential part of their diet, elderberry, salmonberry, low bush cranberry, bearberry, crowberry, cloud berries and any other berries bears can find will be gorged on during the summer months.

In addition to salmon and berries, bears consume a wide variety of vegetation, including devil's club, alpine grasses and sedges. On Kodiak Island, ninety nine per cent of the vegetation is edible.

As the pictures depicted here indicate, bears are often seen crashing through the water during the summer months in pursuit of a much-desired salmon. This act is exciting to witness as one can watch different bears use alternative techniques to slay their mighty prize.

When feeding on salmon, bears prefer the most nutritious parts, being the brains, bellies, flesh and eggs.

Bears will normally feed during the day unless they are forced to compete for food in which case they will become more nocturnal and feed primarily at night. This is often the case with young bears that have recently been released from their mother.

Despite their propensity for a solitary existence, brown bears congregate at high densities where food is abundant, such as salmon streams.

During the summer to early fall, brown bears will eat an average of 80 to 90 pounds of food per day gaining some 3 to 6 pounds of fat, if it is available to them.
