In the fall, bears feed on red and coho salmon if it is available to them.
They continue to eat berries; elderberry, salmonberry, low bush cranberry, bearberry and crowberry.
In addition, bears forage for roots, lupine, bog orchid, and other vegetation with the hopes of obtaining enough fat reserve before entering their dens for winter hibernation.
Bears will utilize the most nutritious parts of their food to obtain maximum weight gain.
When feeding on salmon, they prefer the brains, flesh, bellies and eggs.
The internal organs of game animals are the first to be eaten and berries are preferred when they are ripe and have the highest sugar content.
